You have to start somewhere!!

A little over 5 years ago my good friend was going to a bachelorette party and asked if I would try making decorated cookies for her. They would be lighthouses and crabs to match the Nautical theme since the party was in Montauk, NY. I had been baking for years at that point but decorating cookies was a new world to me; I figured can’t hurt to try. After a quick Google search I can across a recipe by Sweetopia for some roll out cookies & my journey began.

I got my butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla & flour together. Grabbed my Kitchenaid Mixer and a little while later I had freshly baked cookies. I remember expecting them to taste like Pillsbury sugar cookies, being completely honest I was disappointed when they didn’t. However, these cookies are delicious; a shortbread type of cookie and the girls at the party couldn’t stop raving about them! Once they were baked it was time for the real test - how would the design come out?

I used the Royal Icing Recipe from Sweetopia as well. It took me forever to decorate these cookies! I used Wilton brand piping bags, icing dye and piping tips, they’re all readily available at Michaels Craft store which is close to my house. I was so nervous but loved watching the creations come to life! Once the cookies were complete and dry I wanted to keep them because I was so happy with the finished product! Not a Pinterest fail for this one! [Although there have been plenty along the way!] Looking back maybe these cookies aren’t the best, the cookies spread and lost some shape, the icing has dents, the list can continue. But they were my best at the time!

The best thing about the internet is that there is so much information at our fingertips! Have you always said “I’m not a baker, I can’t do that!”? Now is your time to change that. You can do anything you set your mind to! There will be bumps along the way but those will help make you better at whatever you are setting out to do!
