10 Favorite Baking Tools for Cakes

There are so many items available to help make baking easier, just type “baking tools” into Google or Amazon and the list is near endless! The reality is you don’t need fancy expensive gadgets to make a pretty cake, you don’t even NEED all of these either, especially if you don’t plan to bake all the time! I didn't include the obvious items such as cake pans, non-stick spray, icing, and cake ingredients. Here is a list of my favorite must have tools!

I really don’t know how I lived without these! You will get every last bit of batter or icing from your bowl with the help of these. It’s come to a point that I use them for almost anything they’re so convenient and inexpensive. The best part is - because the handle isn’t a separate piece you won’t get mold like you do with the wooden handle ones.

These are so simple to use and help you to get a nice flat icing on your cakes. This set includes scrapers which can get your icing extra smooth or use one to add some grooves to your design.

When I began cake decorating I would use ziplock bags and cut the corner, you can do that if you want to test the waters! To get a nicer design, and avoid having a ziplock bag that pops splattering icing everywhere, I suggest using piping bags. These ones are made of a bit thicker material which is perfect for buttercream. You can use with piping tips or just cut a at the bottom.

4) Piping tips for cupcakes

There are so many options for piping tips and each serve a different purpose. The number of the tip indicates the size or style and each one will be used for different designs from writing to piping flowers and leaves. This link is just to get you started with 3 tips that are great for cute easy flowers. They are the perfect addition to make any cake extra special.

Regular liquid food color from the grocery store can be used to color your icing but using too much may thin it out so best to use sparingly. I recommend AmeriColor Gel Icing dye as it gives a vibrant color without thinning your icing. Icing gel colors can add up quick in cost, Michaels has single jars of Wilton icing gel canisters in their baking aisle which are a great option as well.

This tool is certainly not needed to decorate a cake but it is super helpful! I finally invested in a turntable years after I began baking and it helped me so much when icing cakes. I am able to hold my scraper still and rotate the turn table to get a more even finish on my cake. You can also use this as a cake stand, just add a ribbon around it for a prettier look!

These are the best for your liquid ingredients to get the most accurate measurements. I prefer the glass ones but plastic would work fine also.

These are best to use for dry ingredients as you can level the top of the measuring cup. The spoons are perfect for adding accurate amounts of ingredients such as baking soda, salt, and vanilla.

9) Cake Leveler

This tool is not necessary, you could easily use a knife and steady hand to level your cake before stacking but I find this to be very helpful. This particular level I have had for years and love how it works, important to note that it only accommodates cakes up to 10”. Leveling your cake is important before staking to avoid cracking and sliding on the top layers.

This might seem like a pretty obvious item but it wasn’t until a few years into baking that I began using parchment paper. It can be used for so many things that it is great to keep around. Use it to line your pan if your cake always sticks, create decorations to add to your cakes, the possibilities are almost endless with this!
